Go Nuts for Doughnut Day!

Delicious doughnuts in a stack, hand reaching from above taking one off the top

National Doughnut Day falls on the first Friday in June, with a second celebration on November 5, so there’s no shortage of reasons to indulge. The June tradition began with The Salvation Army, honoring the “doughnut lassies” who served fresh doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. Years later, the American Red Cross “Doughnut Dollies” carried that spirit forward during Vietnam.

Over time, “doughnut” became “donut,” thanks in part to pop culture influences like The Simpsons and familiar names like Dunkin’. However you spell it, the mouthwatering appeal is the same. Today’s donuts go far beyond powdered sugar or cinnamon. Local bakeries and specialty shops are dreaming up flavors like key lime pie, mocha crème, and mango-filled delights, topped with everything from cereal and crushed candy to drizzles and cookie crumbles. Still, many would say nothing beats the simple joy of a warm, freshly glazed donut.

With so many delicious options to choose from, National Donut Day on June 5 is the perfect time to enjoy a favorite or try something new.
